Heritage Valley: A California Dream Day, Twenty-Six Miles Long

Wake up slow in a town that still has a Main Street worth walking. The Heritage Valley stretches twenty-six miles along the Santa Clara River, through Santa Paula, Fillmore, and Piru — citrus groves on one side, oak-covered foothills on the other, and hardly a crowd in sight.

Start your morning on the Sunburst Railbikes, pedaling side-by-side (electric assist included) straight through sun-kissed citrus and avocado groves. It's a slow, breezy way to see the valley from a vantage point almost no one else gets. Roll back into town for breakfast on a historic Main Street, then spend the afternoon wandering the gardens of Rancho Camulos, a National Historic Landmark where 19th-century California still feels close enough to touch.

Stroll downtown Santa Paula's mural-lined streets, pick up fresh citrus and avocados from a roadside farm stand, or sip something local at one of the valley's small wineries. As evening settles in, head to Lake Piru for a swim, a paddle, or just quiet water and mountain views while the sun drops behind the hills.
