SAN SIMEON
San Simeon’s natural bay provided San
Luis Obispo County with its first seaport.
Beginning with Mission San Miguel in 1797
and during the time of the Mexican rancheros,
all goods were shipped in and out of the bay.
By the 1860s a lively whaling village had grown
around the bay and onto the point.
William Randolph Hearst built a wharf
and warehouses to support the construction
of his castle on the hill in the 1920s. Today,
Sebastian’s store and William R. Hearst
State Park welcome visitors with tranquil
beauty.
